Barns, Blooms, and Birds - Wk 9

Continuing my series . . .

Barns . . .

Wow, do I have a tobacco barn for you this week. My husband and I were driving around Calloway County in Kentucky looking for a specific address of a boat marine to possibly get out boat serviced. As we were driving on Pottertown Road, I saw an unusual tobacco barn just off the road. It was not the typical shaped tobacco barn that I have shared with you over the weeks. It wasn't like any of these below.

We ventured on and found the marine and as we started back, I told my husband I wanted to stop and take a few pics of the unusual tobacco barn. Take a look:

It was like an old log cabin at first glance and was right in the owner's backyard. It had no extensions or extra rooms, it just went straight up. There were probably rows or levels to hang the tobacco on the inside.

Although it was unusual, it had barn doors, with a log keeping the doors shut just like other tobacco barns.

I saw a small window at the top and an open ventilation system on the side also at the top.

Traffic was coming up and down this narrow county road with no shoulder and there I was trying to get pics with my iPhone.

OK, it was time to move on before I got hit by a car. But what do you think about this tobacco barn?

On to blooms now . . .

I have a pot of beautiful begonias blooming by my porch. I must admit, I haven't done much for these begonias other than give them water. They do sit in a shady area of my front yard.

Overlooking the begonias is a cherub sitting on the edge of the porch. I have had her for several years and several house moves. That's a holly branch you see in the pic.

You may remember the "Little Lime" that I shared last week.

Take a look at the changes the gorgeous flowers have made in just a week. Amazing! It started to "pink up."

Now for birds . . .

The small downy woodpecker let me take a few pics of him this week. He comes to my upside-down suet feeder daily.

The finches are always fun to watch at the feeders.

That's a goldfinch, the male house finch, and the female house finch below.

I took these pics of the Red-Tailed Hawk at The Nature Station of Land Between the Lakes where birds are protected and cared for because of injury, being orphaned, or losing their natural fear of humans.

I read that the Red-Tailed Hawk is the most common hawk in North America.

You may see one circling in an open field with his eyes fixed on the ground looking for a vole or rabbit for lunch.

Barns, Birds and Bloom - Wk 8

Here's another week of barns, birds, and blooms for you to enjoy.

The featured barn, this time, is a metal barn with lots of rust.

It looks like most of the pieces of metal are original to the barn. The front does seem to have more rust than the side so who knows if some pieces have been replaced or if it is just the direction that the barn faces and the exposure to wind and moisture.

I kind of like the rust, it shows the barn has weathered the storms, humidity, and moisture in our area of Kentucky. The collage below shows this barn has more windows and roof ventilation.

For blooms, the crepe myrtles in my yard have been putting on a show and I just love it. This crepe is on the edge of our property line and has been covered in blooms.

We have two crepe myrtles in our front bed next to the road. Did you know that Japanese Beetles just love crepes.

We saw them flying around our crepes then eating on them. It is just an invasion! We started spraying immediately with Sevin. I sprayed it right on the beetles.

It took several sprayings and then again after raining. You can see the damage in the image below.

I pretty much spray everything with Sevin to help keep the bugs away.

Are you familiar with Limelight Hydrangea? I have been seeing their gorgeous blooms all around my area so I know they do well here. While I was at a local nursery, I saw some "Little Limes" and decided to purchase one and give it a try. I took a few pics before I planted it to share with you.

Don't you just love every little petal! It only gets about 4-5 feet high so it should be very manageable.

It's pretty small this year so we will see how it does over the winter and hope for gorgeous blooms next summer. The nursery said it blooms on new growth. I've got to get it mulched very soon.

I've planted two mophead hydrangea this year too. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

On to birds now. I'm sharing another owl that I photographed in the backyard area of The Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes. You may remember from a previous post, these animals have either been injured, orphaned, or have lost their natural fear of humans. This owl is the Barred Owl.

Isn't it just breathtaking? Those eyes!! His hooting call is "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all? Now check out his brown-and-white stripped plumage.

Wasn't the Barred Owl just amazing?

Barns, blooms and birds - Wk 4

Still continuing my series on barns, blooms and birds for Week 4.

This red tobacco barn is also around the Murray, KY, area and less than a mile down the road from me.

Did you notice how small the windows on this barn are? It's certainly not like a hay barn you see in other places.

I imagine the small openings have a part in drying the tobacco. The small windows certainly make the barn look massive.

This tobacco barn also has good fences surrounding it.

I am so happy to say that my roses are budding and blooming again. This week is even better than last week. I had been worried about them but they are putting on a show this week.

The shasta daisies are always so showy in the yard and super easy to care for.

I'm seeing more tomatoes and blooms on the vines. My tomatoes are in pots this year.

This cute little Downy woodpecker will eat black oil sunflower seeds when my suet feeders are empty. He will eat at the feeders with me sitting just a few feet away. I had friends of mine sitting on the deck the other day and he still came over and wasn't bothered by us at all.

My husband just returned from a walleye fishing trip into Canada. He has a few images I wanted to share with you. Although they aren't close up shots like my yard birds (he only had a small camera with him), I'll show you a few of these Bald Eagles he captured.

One in flight and one perched.

Barns, Blooms and Birds

I'm covering a few topics today in my post. Since I moved to Kentucky in November, I have been fascinated by the old tobacco barns. This one is a local barn in the Murray area. I love the painted barn quilt.

I attended the Memorial Day service at the Mound City, Illinois, National Cemetery to honor fallen soldiers. The skies were overcast and it even rained right before the service began. Then it stopped and held off until after the service.
