At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 18

The White-breasted Nuthatch has been visiting regularly. He loves black-oil sunflower seeds. 

A Mourning Dove let me take a few pics of him on my deck railing. Usually they are on the ground below my feeders but today I got lucky. Do you see the black spots on his wings his big eye seems to be looking right at me. 

I've been filling my finch feeders just about daily with nyjer food. I could watch these American Goldfinches all day. 

I haven't seen any eye disease on them. 

Several juvenile goldfinch are coming to the feeders. They are just too cute. 

This little one put on a show drying his wings. Lots of fluttering.

The Northern Cardinals are visiting and I am thankful to get a few pics  of this beauty.

Birding and Boating on Kentucky Lake

We had a chance to go boating on Kentucky Lake today. It was a beautiful day on the lake, the sun was shining, the water was calm, and it was so relaxing to be in the boat just riding around. 

A pair of Pekin Ducks were in the bay where we keep our boat. Are you thinking Aflac yet? Or even Donald Duck?

These cute white ducks are the most popular breed of domestic ducks in the US. They are calm, very social and did you know they can't fly.

A Double-Crested Cormorant seem to be on guard as we left the bay heading out into the channel. 

In another bay, we saw turtles sunning on a log next to the edge of the water.

Kentucky Lake is 134 miles long and has 2064 miles of shoreline to enjoy.

Ring-billed Gulls are seen around the lake. If you look closely, you can see the black rings around the tip of the yellow bill. I wish the gull would have flown closer to our boat so my pics would have been clearer.

His black wing tips are spotted with white. 

When we came back into Cypress Bay on the lake, a Great Blue Heron was standing every so still. You can see his black eyebrow that extends towards the back of  his head. 

We couldn't get as close as I would have liked, the water was to shallow for the boat.

In the next shot, notice the orange blob in the air by the heron. What do you think it is?

Did you guess Monarch Butterfly? Yes it was. So here I was in a moving boat trying to focus in and get pics of a Monarch flying through the air. Sorry I did the best I could!

Two For One Shot

Just wanted to share this pic today. I was trying to take a few pics of this cardinal visiting my feeder and look who flew by. Although it's not a perfect shot, I found it amusing to get two for one. 

I'm thankful to be retired and enjoying life with my family. We enjoy boating with our grandsons and look who is driving the boat (just for a minute) - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 17

The small Downy Woodpecker is always a welcomed guest to my suet feeders or scooting up and down the trunks of our birch trees looking for insects. In the second pic of the collage, you can see he was sitting on the deck railing looking up at the suet feeder then up to a branch and  over to the feeder he went. He also likes to eat at the upside down suet feeder. 

The Red-bellied Woodpecker came to my suet feeder this weeks too. He is a medium sized woodpecker with a nice red cap and barred back. The Red-bellied likes to drink from my hummingbird feeders. The first time I saw him hanging on to their feeders, I was shocked. No wonder my hummingbird feeders were empty every day. You wouldn't think with his big thick bill, he could drink out of their feeder. 

A Carolina Wren was first eating loose seeds on our deck, then on the deck railing, then quickly up to the upside down suet feeder. You can really get a look at his warm buffy orange belly in the third pic of the collage. Only the male Carolina Wren sings. 

I am happy to see that I still have hummingbirds at the feeders. I know it won't be for much longer.

A Visit from the Carolina Wren

A sweet little Carolina Wren visited my deck this week. He is such a pretty color of brown on top and a warm buffy-orange below.

He has a long white eyebrow and a bill that is long, slender and turns down. 

Did you know he cocks his tail up while foraging and holds it down while singing? I am thankful this little wren visited my place this week - Judy.
