Old Red Barn

I enjoy photographing old barns around the area where we live in Western Kentucky. This one is an old red barn that I saw on a drive in the country several months ago.  It hasn't been  shared until today. Take a look:

I'm sure this old barn has a story. Wouldn't you love to know it!

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Barns, Blooms, and Birds - Wk 10

I'm bringing you another post in my barns, blooms, and birds series. I was just about out of barn pics to share with you but my husband and I drove around some county roads in our Ranger over the weekend.

Barns . . .

Since we are officially intoFall now, I have a great red barn to share with   you. Love how it's just sitting in a field surrounded by soybeans.

I don't usually share two barns, but today I am. This barn is a small one but has a great looking barn quilt that I think you will enjoy.

Blooms . . .

At the back of our property, some orange jewelweed caught my eye.

I read that the Jewelweed was used to treat poison ivy rashes.

Wild black-eyed susan was growing along a road when we were out driving around.

Ragweed - allergy pills needed.

Weeds with pink blooms.

Mums in bloom for fall.

I'm seeing wooly worms crawling around.

Birds . . .

First I want to say thanks to my birding friends for helping me identify this sweet bird. It was my first time to see a Northern Parula Warbler. It's not a great pic, I had the wrong camera in my hand but I sure was excited to see him.

Other birds in my yard included:

I would say this is a female cardinal but her coloring is just a bit different that the other females I see.

Row 1: Female cardinal, goldfinch, female ruby-throated hummingbird (they are gone now);
Row 2:  tufted titmouse, mourning dove, not sure of row 2 number 3;
Row 3: female downy woodpecker,  Carolina chickadee, and white-breasted nuthatch.

Male Northern Cardinal

That's it for this week. Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.

Barns, Blooms, and Birds - Wk 9

Continuing my series . . .

Barns . . .

Wow, do I have a tobacco barn for you this week. My husband and I were driving around Calloway County in Kentucky looking for a specific address of a boat marine to possibly get out boat serviced. As we were driving on Pottertown Road, I saw an unusual tobacco barn just off the road. It was not the typical shaped tobacco barn that I have shared with you over the weeks. It wasn't like any of these below.

We ventured on and found the marine and as we started back, I told my husband I wanted to stop and take a few pics of the unusual tobacco barn. Take a look:

It was like an old log cabin at first glance and was right in the owner's backyard. It had no extensions or extra rooms, it just went straight up. There were probably rows or levels to hang the tobacco on the inside.

Although it was unusual, it had barn doors, with a log keeping the doors shut just like other tobacco barns.

I saw a small window at the top and an open ventilation system on the side also at the top.

Traffic was coming up and down this narrow county road with no shoulder and there I was trying to get pics with my iPhone.

OK, it was time to move on before I got hit by a car. But what do you think about this tobacco barn?

On to blooms now . . .

I have a pot of beautiful begonias blooming by my porch. I must admit, I haven't done much for these begonias other than give them water. They do sit in a shady area of my front yard.

Overlooking the begonias is a cherub sitting on the edge of the porch.  I have had her for several years and several house moves. That's a holly branch you see in the pic.

You may remember the "Little Lime" that I shared last week.

Take a look at the changes the gorgeous flowers have made in just a week. Amazing! It started to "pink up."

Now for birds . . .

The small downy woodpecker let me take a few pics of him this week. He comes to my upside-down suet feeder daily.

The finches are always fun to watch at the feeders.

That's a goldfinch, the male house finch, and the female house finch below.

I took these pics of the Red-Tailed Hawk at The Nature Station of Land Between the Lakes where birds are protected and cared for because of injury, being orphaned, or losing their natural fear of humans.

I read that the Red-Tailed Hawk is the most common hawk in North America.

You may see one circling in an open field with his eyes fixed on the ground looking for a vole or rabbit for lunch.

There you have it, another week of Barns, Blooms, and Birds. Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Barns, Blooms and Birds - Wk 7

I'm continuing my series on barns, blooms, & birds.

Today I'm featuring another local tobacco barn around the Murray, KY, area. Take a look:

The barns hosts another beautiful quilt pattern on the side.

Another small window on the top front of the tobacco barn can be seen as in other tobacco barns. The doors are closed so not sure what's inside this time of the year.

Tobacco is growing in the fields around Murray and you can see it has a flowering bloom on the top.

I didn't realize tobacco plants bloomed but thought it would be appropriate to show the flower for my blooms section of this post. I read, as the tobacco plant reaches maturity, it produces a long spike of flower buds at the top of the plant. These plants are growing in a field down the road from me.

Last weekend we visited The Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes, we were happy to see the live wildlife in their Backyard area. The animals in this area could not survive in the wild because of either injury, being orphaned, or having lost their natural fear of humans. They are spectacular to see!

I thought the barn owl would be a perfect one to feature in my barns, blooms and birds series. He looks pretty amazing.

Love his coloring! It looks like he only has one leg. This must be why he is at The Nature Station. Take a look, what do you think?

Yes, barn owls really do nest and roost in abandoned barns. They also nest and roost in cavities, other buildings, and dense trees. They roost during the day and hunt at night.

I'm going to feature all the owls and a few other birds at The Nature Station in another post very soon. Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.

Barns, Blooms, and Birds - Wk 5

Continuing my series . . .

I'm still sharing pictures of barns around the Murray, KY, area. This barn has lots of rust plus those small windows high on the front and sides.

This picture was taken in the fall and you see the doors are closed so there must be tobacco inside.

We photographed this barn again just a couple of weeks ago. This time, we used the barn as a background for pictures of our grandsons.

As we near July 4, I thought you might enjoy a patriotic showing of bloom colors in an urn.

Birds at my feeders on Sunday included:

A blue jay who keeps dropping in for black oil sunflower seeds.

A tufted titmouse who likes to grab a black oil sunflower seed and quickly fly to a branch so he can crack it and enjoy the taste.

We had a terrible storm on Saturday evening. The three birch trees next to our deck didn't handle the storm too well. Each tree has 3-5 trunks and at least 1-2 trunks in each tree were bent way over after the storm and couldn't straighten back up. Today my husband and I had to trim the branches way back hoping the trunks would stand straighter. After losing a lot of branches from our trimming, the trunks are standing better.

I was worried about the birds during the storm but today I put out new food in the feeders and my yard birds soon returned.

The Northern Cardinal visited right away.

Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life In Kentucky - Judy.
