At the Feeders and in the Trees #46

I was up early the other morning and looked out the widow to check the bird activity at the feeders and in the frees. Lots of birds were visiting so I grabbed my camera. The light was not bright, and it bounced off the green leaves of the trees by my deck. The pics all have a greenish background that I have lighten so give you a better view of the birds.

The male Goldfinches are starting to show their brilliant yellow color for the season.

I was thrilled to click the Goldfinch just raising his wings to take off. It's fun to capture pics of the birds just before flight.

In the top pic of the collage, the male Goldfinch in the middle seems to be giving some food to the Goldfinch on the right.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are returning to our area. The next collage shows the female Grosbeak. Her most distinguishing mark is her eyebrow. Once you know to look for the eyebrow, she is a dead giveaway to identifying her. Her chest is streaked with brown and white, and she has a big beak.

The male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is much more colorful. He is just bursting with color with his black, white and red/rose color body. He is a showstopper!

The female Cardinal has her own beauty. She isn't brightly colored like the male, she is a warm buffy color, then has red-orange color on her wings, tail, and crown. She does have a crest that you can really see in the next collage. She just kept moving her head and I kept snapping pics.

In the next collage, you see a Goldfinch and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the feeder together. In the top pic notice the Goldfinch's leg lifted. Then in the bottom pic of the collage, the Goldfinch is just about ready to fly away. I bet you checked out the female Grosbeak's eyebrow too.

I would love to hear what birds you are seeing in your area - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees #39

When winter arrives, the Cardinals start their daily visit.

What is thrill it is to look outside and there they are sitting on the branches of the trees off of our deck.

This one has grabbed a seed and clinching it in his mouth. Enjoys the content. Soon drops the shell.

The Northern Cardinals certainly made by day. Take care friends and remember to give the birds food and water - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 6

The weather in our area has been crazy. Yesterday, it was in the sixties which was exceptionally warm for February and now today we are in the twenties. I have been keeping my feeders full all winter so my yard birds have plenty to eat. With the dramatic change in temperature today, the birds have been in a frenzy. All of my images were taken today, February 9, 2017, as I observed their change in behavior.

The goldfinches have been all over the feeders and in the trees just waiting their turns to eat.

They were even fussing at each other.

Their feathers are puffed out trying to stay warm.

Their frenzy continued. They were here most of the day.

Then they would be gone for a short while.

They continued to return until late in the day.

I captured the female Northern Cardinal puffing her feathers to hold in body heat.

She also left and returned many times during the day.

Even the tiny Carolina Chickadee has remarkable insulation from it's feather in the cold weather and days like this one.

Please remember to keep your feeders full for our feathered friends - Judy.

Barns, Blooms, and Birds - Wk 10

I'm bringing you another post in my barns, blooms, and birds series. I was just about out of barn pics to share with you but my husband and I drove around some county roads in our Ranger over the weekend.

Barns . . .

Since we are officially intoFall now, I have a great red barn to share with   you. Love how it's just sitting in a field surrounded by soybeans.

I don't usually share two barns, but today I am. This barn is a small one but has a great looking barn quilt that I think you will enjoy.

Blooms . . .

At the back of our property, some orange jewelweed caught my eye.

I read that the Jewelweed was used to treat poison ivy rashes.

Wild black-eyed susan was growing along a road when we were out driving around.

Ragweed - allergy pills needed.

Weeds with pink blooms.

Mums in bloom for fall.

I'm seeing wooly worms crawling around.

Birds . . .

First I want to say thanks to my birding friends for helping me identify this sweet bird. It was my first time to see a Northern Parula Warbler. It's not a great pic, I had the wrong camera in my hand but I sure was excited to see him.

Other birds in my yard included:

I would say this is a female cardinal but her coloring is just a bit different that the other females I see.

Row 1: Female cardinal, goldfinch, female ruby-throated hummingbird (they are gone now);
Row 2:  tufted titmouse, mourning dove, not sure of row 2 number 3;
Row 3: female downy woodpecker,  Carolina chickadee, and white-breasted nuthatch.

Male Northern Cardinal

That's it for this week. Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.
