Just A Little Snow

I made sure to get my feeders filled yesterday in anticipation of the couple inches of early snow last night. 

The weather did exactly what the forecast stated so the birds are hungry and looking for food.  I'm seeing lots of yard birds at the feeders like the finches.

The little Downy Woodpecker is up and down the birch tree this morning.

He is visiting the suet feeder too. 

The Carolina Chickadee grabs a seed and flies away quickly.

The Northern Cardinal is looking stunning this morning with the sun shining on him.

A Visit from the House Finch

I've been keeping by feeders filled with lots of black-oil sunflower seeds, saffron seeds, and suet cakes for the birds. With the weather turning colder, they are in need of food.

The House Finch is often mistaken for a Purple Finch but if you look at the pic below, you can see more of a brownish color on top of his head. This is an indicator this is a House Finch and not a Purple Finch. 

The House Finches have been flocking to the feeders and I am thankful to have food for them.

These birds aren't migratory birds so they visit my feeders year round here in Western Kentucky. It is a fairly new bird to Kentucky and was first reported in the early 1970s.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 5

I have enjoyed all the birds at the feeders and in the trees this week. 

They are all so fun to watch. A great bushy crest and large black eyes for the tufted titmouse make identification easy.  

This little gray bird grabs a seed and hurries to a small branch to crack it.

Female and male finches . . .

The Downy Woodpecker has been the last one to leave the feeders each day this week.

The Downy has beautiful tail color patterns.

Ready for flight.

The Norther Cardinal has a striking silhouette. 

If you look closely, you can see the tiny black eyes of the Carolina Chickadee.

He is such a cutie!

I got lucky and caught him ready to take off.

I've been seeing a few American Robins in my yard. You can't miss the warm orange underparts and the dark heads.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 3

What a stunning view to see the Northern Cardinals every day at my feeders this week. 

I've been scattering sunflower hearts on my deck for the Dark-eyed Juncos. 

The Carolina Chickadee loves the black-oil sunflower seeds in the feeders. He is so cute, just grabs a seed and runs. 

The Carolina Wren is eating nut and berry seed mix.

The house finches are visiting by the dozens.

Next are a male and female house finch at the feeder.

I'll share pics of the female house finch and the female purple finch so you can see the differences in identification. The female house finch in the top pic has no distinctive eyebrow. Now, check out the white eyebrow of the female purple finch in the bottom pic. 

The eyebrow is the key for me in identification of the female purple finch. There is also a line extending backward from the lower base of the bill.

Barns, Blooms & Birds - Week 6

The barn I have to share this week is an unusual barn but yet beautiful. Can you tell what is unusual about this barn?

Here is what's unusual about this barn, you can drive through it to get to the house behind. Wouldn't that be neat to drive through a barn to get to your house.

Love the quilt block on the barn. 

This barn is one of my favorites around the Murray, KY, area. It has such a beautiful setting surrounding the barn with the white fences, and corn in the fields.

The back of the barn is also noteworthy.  I love the cannas in bloom along the sides of the barn. Did you know cannas are a lilly type of tropical American plant. Gosh, I haven't had cannas in years, I think I need to add them to my yard next year. 

The blooms in my yard aren't as plentiful this week but happy I have some petunias in a pot to share. 

My daylilies are about done for the season, I only had two blooms today. I have really enjoyed them and hate to see their blooms end.

The elephant ears in my yard have certainly done well this year. My friend, JoAnn, from Jo On Legacy Lane, shared bulbs with me in the spring. 

She gave me so many that I planted the extras in a pot on my back deck and look how they have grown. I should have plenty of bulbs for next spring. 

I'm so happy that I have been seeing a few goldfinches at my feeders again. The house finches visit each day and their young are at the feeders too.

I was lucky enough to capture a few more good pics of the Northern Cardinals at the feeders.
