At the Feeders and in the Trees #44

I've been doing my At the Feeders and in the Trees series for a few years, my love for birds continues, so my series lives on into 2022. My blog began in 2011 with tablescapes and vignettes. Then in 2012, while continuing my tablescape posts, I started to branch out and began posting about birds.

This week, my feeders have been very busy with lots of birds visiting. Keeping my feeders filled is a must this time of year as food sources become scarce for them.

The Northern Cardinal is so stunning against the white snowflakes.

In additional to his brilliant red color, he has a distinguished black mask and large red bill.

It is always exciting to see the male and the female together. Did you know the male often feeds the female during courtship? This isn't happening right now but more in the springtime.

The cardinal is a very popular bird and is the state bird in several states. My feeders are stocked with black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts and safflower seeds. These are all seeds that the cardinals enjoy.

Another popular bird that visits my feeders is the American Goldfinch.

In summer months, the American Goldfinch is a brilliant yellow; during the winter the colors are more subdued. You will see dramatic color changes in the male over the next few months.

The Goldfinches are flocking to the feeders. You can see several together below. They are eating the black oil sunflower seeds and also like Nyjer seeds.

Other visitors include finches, brown trasher, white-throated sparrow, chickadees and dark eyed junco.

Thanks for stopping in to see the birds "At the Feeders and in the Trees" - Judy.

What are you seeing at your feeders?

The American Goldfinch in My Garden

Recently, I stepped out on my back deck and caught a glimpse of a goldfinch on the coneflowers in my gardens.

Who wouldn't notice the brilliant yellow color of the goldfinch and his conical bill.

I couldn't step back in the house quick enough to reach for my camera and start snapping pics. My first few pics were hardly in focus.

I hadn't taken pics of a goldfinch in a while, so I was really excited. When the finch was ready to move on, he hopped over to some Black-eyed Susan flowers.

Do you have the same excitement I do when you get a chance to photograph a bird you haven't seen for a while and or completely new bird?

Thanks for stopping by - Judy

Just A Little Snow

I made sure to get my feeders filled yesterday in anticipation of the couple inches of early snow last night.

The weather did exactly what the forecast stated so the birds are hungry and looking for food.  I'm seeing lots of yard birds at the feeders like the finches.

The little Downy Woodpecker is up and down the birch tree this morning.

He is visiting the suet feeder too.

The Carolina Chickadee grabs a seed and flies away quickly.

The Northern Cardinal is looking stunning this morning with the sun shining on him.

Hope you are feeding the birds in your area. Enjoy the day - Judy?

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 27

I have been particularly interested in the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks this week.

They seem to spend the most time at the feeders with safflower seeds.

The female Rose-breasted Grosbeak is visiting daily too. She has an obvious white eyebrow.

She is a heavily streaked brown and white bird.

I was happy to get a pic of both of them at the feeder.

I did snap a couple of pics of the male starting to take flight.

It's great seeing the hummingbirds each day at the feeders and in the trees.

The Goldfinches are eating the nyjer food at the feeders.

A Visit from the American Goldfinch

It's wonderful to see the American Goldfinch in their beautiful brilliant yellow color at the feeders.

During the winter months this perky 5 inch male bird isn't bright yellow but it much paler with a dull olive yellow color.

He does visit my feeders all winter so it is exciting to watch him return to his spring and summer colors.

I'm thanking for all the birds at my feeders. Thanks for stopping by - Judy

American Goldfinch

The American Goldfinches are just a beautiful small bird. I love seeing them at my feeders.

They are really one of my favorites with their their bright yellow color in the spring and summer and hints of a paler yellow in the winter.

This time of year in Kentucky, the goldfinch's face is a paler yellow with grayish brown underparts. This one is eating nyjer food.

You can see in the photo below their wings are black with white markings. This pair is eating from a seed cake.

They also love to eat black oil sunflower seeds from a cling feeder below.

The American Goldfinch  was enjoying nyjer food but was run off by a female House Finch. Glad he has a mouthful of food to take with him.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

A Visit from the American Goldfinch

One of the things I am thankful for today is that the American Goldfinches are still visiting my feeders. They are one of the first birds that I started feeding years ago.

They are here year round in Kentucky so I have them at the feeders through all the seasons. During the winter the males lose most of their  brilliant yellow color and the coloring becomes more of a dullish gray.

Here's a collage I made back in June, you can really see the difference in the male color during the summer months.

Thanks for stopping in for a visit from the American Goldfinch - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 21

I've had a nice mix of feeder birds visiting this week: the Carolina Wren, American Goldfinch, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Chickadee, Chipping Sparrow, and the Tufted Titmouse.

I'm always thankful for the many birds that visit my yard and feeders and that I am able to provide food for them. Hope you enjoyed my collage of visitors for Week 21 of At the Feeders and in the Trees - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 20

A Chipping Sparrow visited this week. Take a look:

A Northern Mockingbird is still visiting and gave me a quick shot while he stopped on top of a hanging water source near the deck.

This little American Goldfinch is all puffed out. Hope he is not sick and is just trying to stay warm.

I am seeing the Purple Finch and Cardinals at the feeders this week.

The red-bellied woodpecker is a regular visitor to the upside-down suet feeders or scavenging up and down the birch trees.

I'm thankful that the birds visit my feeders. It bring me such pleasure to watch them.

Our Mexican Sage and Elephant ears have put on a beautiful show this summer and early fall but tonight may be their last night of the season. Our temps our supposed to be in the lower 30's.

I will cut the elephant ears back and dig the bulbs to store in our shop for the winter. The sage isn't hardy for our zone but I'm going to try cutting it back and use a thick layer of mulch and hope to see sprouts in the spring. I'm also going to try to gather some seeds from the sage. The purple color of the sage was gorgeous.

Thanks for stopping by to see the birds at the feeders and in the trees - Judy.
