At the Lake - Boats, Friends, Water & Sky

Boating season has begun on Kentucky Lake. The boats are out, friends are getting together, and the water and sky are gorgeous.

Boats on the Water

It's June and the boats are coming out of the slips and cruising on the lake. Some boaters like to cruise up and down the lake while other boaters head into the coves to spend time in the water or just hanging out.

Family and Friends

Over the weekend, we ventured out on the lake with family and friends. It was great to be in the sun (sunscreen applied) soak up some rays and enjoy our time together.

The Water and the Sky

Who doesn't love a gorgeous day on the lake when the water is great, and the sky is beautiful.

When the day comes to an end, we start planning our next day at the lake.

At The Lake - Great White Egret

My husband and I have been watching for the Great White Egrets on Kentucky Lake this fall. My pics aren't great, the water was so shallow, and it made it extremely hard to get close enough for that perfect shot.

The Great White Egret has long black legs and an orange beak.

They fly with their S-curved neck retracted. Unlike storks, ibis, spoonbills, and cranes who fly with their necks outstretched.

They grow to 38 inches tall are found on every continent except Antarticia.

This bird is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

They hunt in shallow water and swallow small fish whole. They also like frogs, crayfish, dragonflies, and grasshoppers.

At The Lake - American White Pelican Migration

Living near Kentucky Lake, we get to enjoy the water and the migration of the American White Pelicans.

We are boaters so we are at the lake every weekend and sometimes during the week (nice part about being retired).

The American White Pelicans arrive at Kentucky Lake in September, and we love to go "pelican hunting".

For me, Pelican Hunting means trying to get the best photographs I can of these huge birds. I have a zoom lens on my camera, but it is often not quite enough to get that perfect pic. Guess I need a bigger zoom!

Because they are usually in such shallow water, we often take out one of our fishing boats. The shallow water makes it difficult to get close to the pelicans.

Whether it is a single pelican or a pod of pelicans, it's always a thrill to find them. Love the reflection in the bottom pic of the pelicans.

A unique characteristic of the pelican is the "gular pouch" inside its beak. This pouch is used in catching fish and holding fish after they are scooped up.

Their wings are white and black, and they can have a wingspan of 9 feet.

The American white Pelicans have short strong legs with webbed toes which allows them to take off from the water. I plan to do a little more pelican hunting next weekend.

Thanks for stopping by to see the American White Pelicans - Judy.

At the Lake - American White Pelicans

What an exciting surprise we got on a short trip to the lake this week!

My sister-in-law came for a weekend visit while the guys went deer hunting. You know how some guys just love deer camp! But for the girls, we decided to spend the weekend sewing and doing girl things.

Although the temps were in the low 30's and it was windy, we needed to make a quick run to the lake to pick up her earrings that were left on her boat.

When we pulled in the parking lot at Cypress Springs where we boat, I saw there were American White Pelicans at the boat docks. I can't tell you how excited I was to see them.

I couldn't get out of the car fast enough and head down the dock to try and get a few pics before they swam off.

At first, the pelicans started swimming away but after I stood still a bit, they started swimming back to the dock.

The pelicans usually start migrating in the fall and arrive to Kentucky Lake in October. So, I certainly wasn't expecting any to still be hanging around on the lake in November.

Hope you enjoyed seeing the American White Pelicans on Kentucky Lake - Judy.

Sorry my pics aren't great, but I only had my iPhone with me.

At the Lake - A Crawfish Boil

Have you ever been to a crawfish boil? Well, come on over to the crawfish boil at the lake.

Friends on the dock hosted a crawfish boil and it was awesome. We were delighted to attend. Take a look and enjoy the boil!

Meet Veteran Mike, the owner of Crawfish Willy's. Mike says he takes great pride in hand selecting only the best crawfish, alligator products, frog legs and shrimp which is straight from the southern docks of Louisiana. You can find Mike on Facebook, just search for Crawfish Willy's.

Mike brings in his set up and cooks the food right on the dock at Cypress Springs. He just has to "boil up" some crawfish, corn cobs, potatoes, sausages and seasonings. I'm sure Mike "turns-up" the flavor with delicious add-ins.

All this deliciousness and more goes into the crawfish boil. Mike travels around the area for his boils. I am not affiliated with Crawfish Willy's but just want to see him be successful.

The tables were decorated in a Mardi Gras theme with Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold.

Now it's time to get in line and fill your plate.

That my hubby filling his plate at the boil. He absolutely loved the food.

Who could resist a plate full of crawfish, corn on the cob, potatoes, and sausages? This guy has his plate filled to the brim and may go back for seconds. I didn't know him, but he was kind enough to let me snap his pic.

Who knows, you might want to try your hand at throwing a crawfish boil! It might look a little overwhelming, but you can handle it.

We ended our day at the lake relaxing with friends on a floating dock watching the calming water in Cypress Bay as some geese swam by.

What an awesome crawfish boil at the lake! Thanks for stopping in. So, what do you think could you throw a boil - Judy?

Do you know how to eat crawfish? Here's link that shows you how.

At the Lake - Family Fun

When we moved to Western Kentucky in late 2015, we were thrilled to live 20 minutes from Kentucky Lake.

We have been boaters for a number of years, so the lake life is one we love.

Although I have made several posts about the lake (mostly birds on the lake), I have decided to start a new series called "At the Lake" and share some of the beauty of Kentucky Lake and our adventures.

The Great Blue Heron resides on Kentucky Lake and there are lots of them.

We celebrated Mother's Day at the lake on Sunday afternoon with our daughter and family.

Our daughter brought several pots of flowers to go on the end of the finger between their boat and ours. I secured the pots with a rope for now, they shouldn't blow off. We will water the flowers with lake water. The fish emulsion is so good for the plants, no other fertilizers are needed.

We took our boat out in Cypress Bay to check out some of the damage from recent storms.

There were several trees down.

Then out into the channel for some real cruisin'.

For us, boating is great family time, the grandsons don't bring any "electronics." It's just fun times on the lake.

After the family left the lake, we decided to take our fishing boat out for a spin around the bay. It gave us time to talk about our day on the lake. We are so grateful for our family and having the chance to enjoy the lake together.

The end of a perfect day on Kentucky Lake.

I would love to hear what you enjoy doing in your spare time - Judy.
