We recently visited Yellowstone National and were just amazed at the number of buffalo (bison) we saw this year.
Did you know that Yellowstone is the only place in the US where buffalo (bison) have lived continuously since prehistoric times?
Seeing the herds of bison in the Lamar Valley area of the park reminded me of a old western movie. They comprise the nation's largest bison population on public land.
The male bull can weigh up to 2,000 lbs. and can live 12-15 years and some up to 20.
Love how this buffalo is kicking up a little dirt and dust.
The buffalo roan freely in the park. Cars stop and cameras start clicking. People get so excited to see buffalo or any of the wildlife in the park. I'll share some of the other wildlife next time.
We found some buffalo fur one day when we stopped for a picnic.
We saw several baby calves with their moms in the large herds.
Check out this proud Mom and her calve.
The buffalo seem to move slow but are very agile and can run up to 35 mph. It's always important to remember they are wild animals.
Thanks for stopping in and hope you enjoyed the buffalo of Yellowstone - Judy.

I never got to that part of the States so I'm very glad to see your photos. They are amazing animals!
ReplyDeleteI've pretty much only seen buffalo on TV in westerns myself. With their huge size they have a bit of mystery to them but they did fulfil an important role as food and fur for clothing years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to MM.
The closest I ever got to these creatures was at the zoo. How wonderful to see them in nature...I have always wanted to visit this magical park.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I also heard that they are wanting to cull the heard by moving some of them because they are starting on innerbreed. The calves are precious.
ReplyDeleteThe buffaloes here are so different. Not so hairy at all. Nice pics you got, a great informative series.
ReplyDeleteHappy ODW!
Amazing pictures!

Wonderful photos! I loved my visit to Yellowstone a few years ago. It is my all time favorite National Park! Did you know there are descendants of Yellowstone bison living in Colorado? They roam free in a nature preserve that is part of Denver parks system
ReplyDeleteVery interesting
ReplyDeleteLove your post! Beautiful pictures. I really want to go!
ReplyDeleteAren't they amazing. We saw herds in Boulder Colo. it was really interesting to watch them. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI linked for Outdoor Wednesday too. I enjoyed visiting. I will look for your follow button.
Yellowstone is one of my favorite parks to visit. They are cool animals and the babies are cute. Awesome series on the buffalo.. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat! I love Yellowstone and always enjoy seeing the bison. So glad to see that you called them bison, too. So many people mistakenly think they are buffalo, but the Park Ranger explained to us that true buffalo don't live in the U.S. You took some great photos! How interesting that you found some bison hair during your picnic. Nice post, thx for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThe bison are rather magnificent creatures and you have some wonderful photos of them. They look so strong and determined!
ReplyDeleteMagnificent and peaceful looking creatures, aren't they? I've never been able to even sample buffalo meat and I am reminded why in this post.
