At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 16

I am thankful to see the Carolina Chickadees at my feeders this week. They have been absent for a week or so.

A few Goldfinches have been visiting too.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 15

I'm always Thankful for the birds visiting my feeders. The Downy Woodpecker is always enjoyable to watch. This one is definitely a female because there is no red mark on the back of her neck. 

The House Sparrow visits our area year round. This sparrow has a large black spot on the throat extending down to the chest which indicates he is a male. The female has no black throat patch. Notice his brown back and single white wing bars.

The White-Breasted Nuthatch is also a year-round visitor. You can't help but notice the black cap and white face, neck and belly. He has a black oil sunflower seed in his mouth in the larger picture on the left. 

The hummingbird is always a fun welcomed guest at the feeders. This female Ruby-Throated Hummingbird has no neck patch which reflects red like the male.

Late Summer Table and A Black-Eyed Susan Centerpiece

I enjoy working in my yard and planting new gardens. Today's table features a Black-Eyed Susan plant that will be finding a home in one of my flower beds.

Dark yellow check napkins were used on the table. . .

along with dark yellow plates and amber stemware to accent the centerpiece.

The Black-eyed Susan plant is seen in many gardens because it provides great color throughout the summer.

Plus they are very heat tolerant and require little care. You can see their leaves are velvety. 

Many live ferns are found in my gardens hence faux ferns were added to the table. 

A friend game me hardy ferns to add to my gardens in the spring and they have grown into beautiful plants.

Blooms and Growing in the Yard #2

Welcome Friends and thanks for stopping by to see what is blooming or growing in my yard.

Here it is the middle of August and I'm happy to say my mini-pumpkin vines are blooming.

This is my first year to plant mini-pumpkins so I'm really excited to see that I now have some actual mini-pumpkins growing on the vines.

Our tomato plants are still blooming. We planted Big Boy and Better Boys just like my Dad always planted. 

Although we only planted 5 tomato plants, we have been getting lots of tomatoes and more coming.

That's about it for my farming skills so on now to some flowers blooming in the yard. 

Blooming below are: purple coneflower, black-eyed Susans, purple verbena, and wild Jewell Weed. The Jewell Weed is growing wild at the back of our property. They say it is nature's cure for poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac. 

The crepe myrtles and hydrangeas are just stunning.

My "little lime" hydrangea did produce some beautiful blooms. This was the second year for this dwarf hydrangea. 

The elephant ears have gone crazy and many are really as big as an elephant's ear. 

Giving a nod to fall, I'll share a some fallish color from my yard with you.

I am so thankful to have flowers blooming and plants growing in my yard.

Welcome Home - a tablescape for friends

Our dear friends came for a weekend stop after returning home from visiting their son and his family in Hawaii.

Gosh, it's so fun to spend time with friends, especially ones that have been our friends over 40 years. You know we were thrilled for them to come and visit us in Kentucky. 

I knew we would set at the table to enjoy our food and share stories about their trip. Their son is military and we are so proud of him.

I wanted the table to be casual but with small reminders of their Hawaiian trip. Placemats in soft colors designed with shells, starfish and coral were used. 

Aqua plates were stacked then topped with aqua and gold bowls.

Our friendship has continued over the years even though we now live nearly six hours apart. 

A coastal vignette was used on a nearby side table. The large shell platter and pineapple were reflective of their trip. Tradition says the pineapple is a symbol of social events and became the meaning of welcome, friendship and hospitality. 

I think we sat at the table for hours catching up. We were so happy to spend time with our friends and welcome them home from their trip.
