At the Feeders and In The Trees #49

What a pleasant surprise I got this morning when I opened the drapes and saw an Eastern Bluebird sitting in the trees off of my deck. Luckily, the camera was an arm's length away and I snapped two pictures before he flew off. 

I do have a few bluebird houses at the back of our three-acre property, and hope the bluebird is nesting in one of them. 

Bluebirds commonly use nest boxes or old woodpecker holes. They eat insects and berries.

In the Birdhouses #1

We have seen bluebirds near the back of our property (three acres) for a couple years but have never been able to photograph them. Last summer, we put out three bluebird houses but no luck. The very first day we put them out, a pair of bluebirds went in one of the houses then soon came out. I guess he didn't like the house or was just checking it out.

Well, this year our luck changed. We started seeing a pair going in and out of one of the houses.  This evening, I was able to sit very still in a chair and snap some pictures. Although my pics aren't perfect, I am happy to just get the opportunity.

The male bluebird has a sky blue head, back and tail. It has a rusty red breast and white belly.(above)

The female is lighter in color with more of a grayer head, back and tail but has the same rusty breast and white belly. (above) Sorry, but this is my best pic of the day.

I only got one pic with the head turned and it's not great but I'll share. You can see the rusty color breast and the white belly. 

You have to look close at the first pic in the second row below and you can see the bluebird flying straight towards me.

Looking Out the Window - The Eastern Bluebird

Looking out my window last week, I saw a beautiful bluebird with brilliant royal on its back and head plus warm red-brown on the breast. 

Gosh, I wish I would have had our better camera instead of my iphone, but I didn't. It was snowing, windy, and cold. I was amazed how long the Eastern Bluebird sat on the branch. Maybe he was too cold to move. 

I think I need to bring the other camera down and keep it close to the window for moments like these. 

I read here that the Eastern Bluebird is a small thrush with a big, rounded head, large eye, lump body, and alert posture. The wings are are long, but the tail and legs are fairly short. The bill is short and straight. 

He was very plump and I sure hope he is able to survive this snowy, cold day. Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.
