At the Feeders and In The Trees #52

It was nice to see a Brown Thrasher at my feeders. It was the first citing of him this year for me.

You just can't help noticing this guy's distinguishing markings: the yellow eye, long legs, long tail, long slightly curved bill and the dark streaks on his under parts.

Other visitors at the feeders included: Carolina Chickadee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Downey Woodpecker, House Finch, and Northern Cardinal.

Hope you have been enjoying watching the birds - Judy.

Birds at Piney Bay - Camping with the Family

Over the Memorial Day weekend, we camped at Piney Campground on Kentucky Lake near Dover, TN. The water was so relaxing to watch.

Shortly after we arrived, I started seeing a Red-headed Woodpecker in the trees and was able to get a few pics. This is my first one to photograph since living in Kentucky for 1.5 years so you know I was excited.

Next my grandson saw a Great Blue Heron in a tree by the edge of the water. I hurried to get a shot and captured him in flight.

A Brown Thrasher was in the grass near the water.

Early one morning we saw Canadian Geese and their goslings in the water.

We had fun with our grandsons boating on Kentucky Lake.

My son-in-law had his kayak and the boys enjoyed time in it but stayed close to the water's edge.

The weekend was great until a terrible storm hit. We did go home that evening between storms then returned the next morning. A few trees were down and lots of debris. We were thankful no one was hurt.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 11

They Are Back!

I am so thankful that the Rose-breasted Grosbeak have returned to my feeders.

The male and the female . . .

They have been eating safflower seeds like crazy. I am filling the feeder daily. They visit my area in summer and during migration. We have four males and four females at the feeders.

A sweet House Wren has been building a nest in the wren house hanging in the birch trees by our deck. He sings all day long! You can see the twig in his mouth then peeking out of his house.

This small Downy Woodpecker is a daily visitor. I had to laugh as he visited every feeder plus tried to peck our metal bird stand.

Then I noticed the reason he was at the seed feeders instead of the upside down suet feeder he usually visits.

The Brown Thrasher has returned for the summer.

He is about 11" in size and is a rusty red bird with a long tail and heavily streaked chest and belly. Check out his bright yellow eyes.

Sorry not a great pic of him in flight but still sharing it. I only had my iPhone with me when I saw him in my neighbor's yard.

Thanks for stopping by for another week of At the Feeders and in the Trees - Judy.

Looking Out the Window: The Brown Thrasher

Looking out my window, I could see a fairly large bird with a long tail sitting on one of the branches off the deck. I got my camera and zoomed in to take a look at its details.

The Brown Thrasher is foxy brown color with heavy dark streaking on its whitish underparts. I read here that it is a songbird with legs that are long and sturdy, and the bill is long and slightly down curved.

The Brown Thrasher has bright yellow eyes as seen below.

He has come to visit in the tree by the deck but I haven't seen him on any of my feeders.  I have put out a new feeder with black oil sunflower seeds so I'm hoping to see him more often.

Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.
