At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 1

I'm starting a new series this week with the birds at my feeders and in the trees. I seem to enjoy having series so here goes another.


The pink-billed Juncos have been on my deck eating seeds this week. They like to eat sunflower hearts.

The Dark-eyed Junco is a star with his pic on the cover of Birds and Blooms. 

This male Downy Woodpecker seems to be loving the bark on our birch trees. 

The red-bellied woodpecker is visiting too. Although I haven't seen him in a while, I'm happy to see this male at the suet feeder. The male has a solid red cap while the female has a bit of a gray cap.

This feeder is filled with a nut and berry mix for the house finches and goldfinches below. 

I bet you recognize this female bird just by looking at her sharp crest and redish/orangish beak. 

You guessed it, the female Northern Cardinal.

The White-breasted Nuthatches are seen year round in Kentucky. They are fun to watch as they usually eat upside down or sideways. 

The Goldfinches love the thistle feed. 

The Tufted Titmouse is another common bird at my feeders. He is very quick to grab a seed and fly to a nearby branch to crack it with his sharp bill and enjoy. He always seems to have his eye on you will his large black eye. 

I am seeing some purple finches at the feeders but haven't gotten any great shots.  Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Christmas Home Tour 2016

We are going to visit my daughter's house in Kentucky for a Christmas Home Tour. The porch on her two-story traditional home is lined with lights.

We are greeted with whimsical elves on the stairs.

They must be waiting for kids to come down the stairs on Christmas morning.

Light the Fire - Baby It's Cold Outside

The temperature today in my area of Kentucky is 21 degrees. Time to light a fire in the fireplace . . . 

But first, I need to simplify the mantel so no chance of Christmas decor catching on fire. I'm keeping the antique window on the mantel but removing all live cedar clipping and going to a faux wreath on the window.

For this mandel redo, I'm going with phrase "less is more." 

Pottery Barn plaid pillows add to the cozy feel. These pillows can easily be removed when the fire is lit.

From too much, over the top and a possible fire hazard.

To keeping it simple and eliminating any chance of a disaster.

Winterberry Christmas Table

For Christmas morning, I have a table set in the dining room with a Fitz and Floyd Santa centerpiece and a shining Christmas tree closeby. 

The table is casual with Pfaltzgraff Winterberry stoneware for an early morning get together.

Winterberry stoneware is a holiday classic with a ring of bright holly berries and branches. A white chop plate by Bordallo Pinheiro serves as a charger for the Pfaltzgraff plate and bowl.

The center of the table is lined with faux Arapahoe pine garland, fresh pine cones, red candles, two delicate ornaments and the F&F Christmas Lodge Santa.

Lenox holly napkins rings with tiny red bows hold the rolled green napkins.

I love the glow that votives add to the table. 

The dining room Christmas tree is flocked and filled with cardinals, ornaments and snowflakes.

I hope you enjoy Christmas with your family and friends.
