At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 5

I have enjoyed all the birds at the feeders and in the trees this week.

They are all so fun to watch. A great bushy crest and large black eyes for the tufted titmouse make identification easy.

This little gray bird grabs a seed and hurries to a small branch to crack it.

Female and male finches . . .

The Downy Woodpecker has been the last one to leave the feeders each day this week.

The Downy has beautiful tail color patterns.

Ready for flight.

The Norther Cardinal has a striking silhouette.

If you look closely, you can see the tiny black eyes of the Carolina Chickadee.

He is such a cutie!

I got lucky and caught him ready to take off.

I've been seeing a few American Robins in my yard. You can't miss the warm orange underparts and the dark heads.

This week's male Northern cardinal images . . .

Thanks for stopping by for a visit - Judy.

Riding Around in the Ranger - Week 2

You may remember in my last post on Riding Around in the Ranger, I took pics of horses which I said I usually don't photograph. Well, this time I'm taking a short ride in the Ranger for a quick pic of a mule down the road from us and I have never photographed a mule!

A friend told me that this mule was put in with some cattle to keep the coyotes away.

I wonder if it works? Let me know if you have heard of this practice and its success.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 4

The birds at my feeders are eating like crazy. So I have been taking lots of photos.

I'm filling the feeders almost daily. The Carolina Chickees can hardly wait for me to put the lid on the feeders and they start whistling. I know they want me to hurry up and get out of the way.

Love this shot of the Tufted Titmouse taking off from the perch.

The Dark-eyed Junco likes to eat sunflower hearts.

Some may not find the Mourning Dove exciting but this is the first time I have ever photographed one in a tree. Usually they are on the ground or on my deck. So I am excited about this pic.

The cardinals are always a joy to watch.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 3

What a stunning view to see the Northern Cardinals every day at my feeders this week.

I've been scattering sunflower hearts on my deck for the Dark-eyed Juncos.

The Carolina Chickadee loves the black-oil sunflower seeds in the feeders. He is so cute, just grabs a seed and runs.

The Carolina Wren is eating nut and berry seed mix.

The house finches are visiting by the dozens.

Next are a male and female house finch at the feeder.

I'll share pics of the female house finch and the female purple finch so you can see the differences in identification. The female house finch in the top pic has no distinctive eyebrow. Now, check out the white eyebrow of the female purple finch in the bottom pic.

The eyebrow is the key for me in identification of the female purple finch. There is also a line extending backward from the lower base of the bill.

Here's a link to help with identification.

Look who is popping his head around the edge of the tree.

Thanks for stopping by to see who is at the feeders and in the trees - Judy.

Riding Around in the Ranger

We had one day recently when it wasn't too cold to take a ride in the Ranger. It's always fun to ride around some of the country roads in our area.

At the nearby lake on Erwin Road we saw a flock of geese but weren't able to get very close. They heard the sound of our engine and took off.

On another county road, we were able to see a brown horse with nice white markings.

He must have thought we were bringing food and immediately started walking towards us.

Then another horse on a different road.

We did see some great looking red berries. I sure hope some birds can eat them.

This was, most likely, our last ride in the Ranger for a few months until Spring arrives. Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 2

I am happy to see that the Carolina Wren has been visiting my feeders again.

The white eyebrow stripe helps to identify him.

His tail is usually cocked upward.

House Sparrows have also been spotted at the feeders. It doesn't seem to bother him that a Downy Woodpecker is on the other side of the suet feeder.

I have noticed that the Downy will let me walk out on the deck, which is right beside the feeders, and doesn't fly off.

The House Sparrow doesn't let me get chose at all. I'm shooting this pic from the other side of my sliding door to the deck.

In the next couple of photos, you can see how much larger the Red-bellied Woodpecker is than the Downy.

I don't see them on the feeder at the same time, usually the Downy waits for the Red-bellied to leave. Sometimes he waits on a nearby branch for his turn.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.
