You may remember in my last post on Riding Around in the Ranger, I took pics of horses which I said I usually don't photograph. Well, this time I'm taking a short ride in the Ranger for a quick pic of a mule down the road from us and I have never photographed a mule!
A friend told me that this mule was put in with some cattle to keep the coyotes away.
I wonder if it works? Let me know if you have heard of this practice and its success.

I have heard of that. Supposedly they make a crazy racket whenever they see/smell/hear coyotes and that scares the coyotes away. Saw some in a field across from my step mom's place in Alabama, in with the cows, and that's why I was told they were there.
ReplyDeleteAs we don't have coyotes I don't know the answer to that. However over here people us geese to warn of intruders, including foxes.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was young there was a man at the stable that rode a mule. It was such a docile and friendly animal. Not sure how it works with coyotes. I know that burros have quite a nasty kick. - Margy

ReplyDeleteI think it is a donkey, not a mule. People here use donkeys as guard animals, too. If they feel threatened, donkeys bray loud enough to wake the dead, and kick like the devil if the coyotes get within range!

My friend, with goats, horses, and pigs, has a Maramema dog to keep the coyotes away!

ReplyDeleteSweet little guy, hard to believe that coyotes would be afraid. But I have heard of llamas being used for that reason. Not sure if that's true or legend either.
