A Visit from Cardinals

I have been so thankful that so many cardinals have been visiting my feeders. The male Northern Cardinal is a beautiful shade of red.

The female is pale brown but has a reddish crest and warm red accents. She has a bright red bill.

Both the male and female have a black face.

You just can't take your eyes off of the cardinals.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 24

With the sleet, snow and ice over the past few days in Western Kentucky, the birds need all the food and water that we can provide.

Here's how my feeders looked when I got home today. I have 11 feeders and they were all empty. I did start filling them quickly.

On a brighter note, I had a couple of new visitors to my feeders and got a few shots to share.

The White-crowned Sparrow was a first for me to photograph. Notice his distinctive head with the black and white stripes, pink peak and gray breast.

The second new visitor for me this week was the Eastern Towhee. This one is the female towhee, hope the male comes to visit soon.

They are in the sparrow family and are a chunky bird with a long, rounded tail. I read they spend most of their time on the ground, but with the ice and snow, they are at my feeders.

Other visitors this week include:

Cardinals

Dark-eyed Junco (love his pink peak)

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Downy Woodpecker (with a female cardinal behind)

American Goldfinch

The American Goldfinches are just a beautiful small bird. I love seeing them at my feeders.

They are really one of my favorites with their their bright yellow color in the spring and summer and hints of a paler yellow in the winter.

This time of year in Kentucky, the goldfinch's face is a paler yellow with grayish brown underparts. This one is eating nyjer food.

You can see in the photo below their wings are black with white markings. This pair is eating from a seed cake.

They also love to eat black oil sunflower seeds from a cling feeder below.

The American Goldfinch was enjoying nyjer food but was run off by a female House Finch. Glad he has a mouthful of food to take with him.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 23

Wow is it cold outside!

Our temps have been below 20 degrees for several days and will continue for all of this week. I am filling my feeders each day and hope you are able to keep your feeders full too.

I don't know what it is about photographing cardinals, but it is always exciting to me to capture them in my trees or at the feeders. They are just so beautiful!

Don't forget about water too.

For Thankful Thursday, I am so thankful that I am able to feed the birds in my yard. I am also thankful for the close relationship I had with my sister. She passed away unexpectedly this week.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 22

The Goldfinches are at the feeders daily and now, with the weather turning much colder, they are depending on the food.

I put out a large cake with meal worms this past week and was surprised to see the finches (photo on the upper right) eating it.

The meal worm cake is a medley mix so it could be there is something else in the mix they are attracted to.

I always love seeing the Carolina Chickadee at my feeders. This past week on Rosyfinch Rambling's blog, I saw the Black-capped and the Mountain Chickadees pics that Kenneth posted. It's interesting to see the differences of the chickadees.

I took this Carolina Chickadee at my daughter's house on Christmas Day.

I did snap a quick pic of the chickadee taking off from the branch. It's not a great pic but I enjoy trying to capture them just as they depart.

The mourning dove usually walks around on the deck eating loose seeds.

The Downy Woodpecker is enjoying another large cake.

I need some help identifying this next bird. Not sure what bird he might be. He reminds me of a wren but his coloring is throwing me off. Hope someone can help me out.

For Thankful Thursday, I am thankful for the time we spent with our grandsons over the Christmas holidays baking cookies, decorating gingerbread houses and making gift containers filled with cookies for friends and neighbors.
