At the Feeders and In The Trees #52

It was nice to see a Brown Thrasher at my feeders. It was the first citing of him this year for me.

You just can't help noticing this guy's distinguishing markings: the yellow eye, long legs, long tail, long slightly curved bill and the dark streaks on his under parts.

Other visitors at the feeders included: Carolina Chickadee, White Breasted Nuthatch, Downey Woodpecker, House Finch, and Northern Cardinal.

Hope you have been enjoying watching the birds - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees #51

A new wren house was hung in the trees this spring and it didn't take long for the wrens to move in.

It didn't take long for small sticks and twigs to start sticking out from the open side vents on the house.

The breeding pair work together filling the house and caring for their young.

The wrens are very energetic as they bounce through the trees from branch to branch.

Their songs are rich and bubbling, and it doesn't take long to recognize them as they sing to each other.

Both parents seem to feed the nestlings.

Thanks for stopping by, hope you enjoyed post #51 of At the Feeders and in the Trees. Happy birding - Judy.

At the Feeders and In The Trees #50

Today is my 50th post in my "At the Feeders and In The Trees" series. This series was started in December 2016. It wasn't always a weekly post then just evolved into something more regular.

I was so thrilled to share an Eastern Bluebird visiting in the trees off the deck in the series Post #49 and now much to my surprise, the Bluebird made a return visit this week.

It's a good thing my camera is always on the counter by the sliding glass door for quick access. The bluebird in looking down in the next picture. He seemed to be looking for insects and flew down to the ground quickly.

Robins are making their appearance for Spring. They will soon be nesting in our area. They are known for eating worms but also eat insects and berries. They do migrate and return in the spring, often, with a new mate.

The Carolina Wren

The Carolina Chickadee is such a cute little, tiny bird.

He visited my feeders for the black-oil sunflower seeds. You can see one in his beak below.

This Downy Woodpecker is a male, you can tell by the red coloring on the back of his head.

The House Finch is often hard to identify from the Purple Finch. The House Finch is redder in color.

Here is a pic of a Purple Finch I took a while back. The Purple Finch is a beautiful raspberry color. There are other identifying features to distinguish these two birds.

The Brown Thrasher has a down curved bill and a starring yellow eye.

Did you know that the Brown Thrasher has over 1,100 different song types and can imitate other birds' songs?

The Tufted Titmouse is larger than the Chickadee. It has a crested head and notice the black patch above the bill.

The titmouse has a large black eye with a thick neck.

I snapped a pic of this Eastern Towhee in the trees near my feeders.

A small Downy Woodpecker came up behind the Towee in the trees.

I'm so happy to welcome spring into our area. My cherry trees are blooming.

Take care and happy birding - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees #47

When the snow falls, so many of the songbirds and yardbirds are searching for food. My feeders have provided lots of food on these recent snowy, bitterly cold days.

Sharing the Food

At the feeders, there are House Finches, Chickadees, Cardinals, Gold Finches, and Nuthatches sharing the Safflower seeds.

In the Trees

The female Northern Cardinal looks gorgeous against the bark of our River Birch Trees.

The Chickadee is a frequent visitor.

Birds in the Trees: Northern Mockingbird, Cardinals, Finches, and Mourning Dove.

Other Birds in the Trees: Downey Woodpecker, Carolina Wren, and female Cardinal.

Spreading their Wings

It's always fun capturing birds spreading their wings. I take tons of pics to get a few like these.

That's it for this time. Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees #46

I was up early the other morning and looked out the widow to check the bird activity at the feeders and in the frees. Lots of birds were visiting so I grabbed my camera. The light was not bright, and it bounced off the green leaves of the trees by my deck. The pics all have a greenish background that I have lighten so give you a better view of the birds.

The male Goldfinches are starting to show their brilliant yellow color for the season.

I was thrilled to click the Goldfinch just raising his wings to take off. It's fun to capture pics of the birds just before flight.

In the top pic of the collage, the male Goldfinch in the middle seems to be giving some food to the Goldfinch on the right.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are returning to our area. The next collage shows the female Grosbeak. Her most distinguishing mark is her eyebrow. Once you know to look for the eyebrow, she is a dead giveaway to identifying her. Her chest is streaked with brown and white, and she has a big beak.

The male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is much more colorful. He is just bursting with color with his black, white and red/rose color body. He is a showstopper!

The female Cardinal has her own beauty. She isn't brightly colored like the male, she is a warm buffy color, then has red-orange color on her wings, tail, and crown. She does have a crest that you can really see in the next collage. She just kept moving her head and I kept snapping pics.

In the next collage, you see a Goldfinch and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the feeder together. In the top pic notice the Goldfinch's leg lifted. Then in the bottom pic of the collage, the Goldfinch is just about ready to fly away. I bet you checked out the female Grosbeak's eyebrow too.

I would love to hear what birds you are seeing in your area - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees #45

Today is a rainy, windy, darkish day in Western Kentucky. I made sure to fill my feeders yesterday when I saw the weather report. It doesn't make for taking great pics of the birds, but I gave it my best.

A small chickadee looks pretty wet in these pics below.

The cardinals have been at my feeders since early morning eating safflower seeds.

The female cardinals are busy eating too. They are soaked and hungry.

Hope you have been able to fill your feeders. I know it will make the birds happy.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.
