In the Bird Houses #2

Last summer, we put up three bluebird houses and got no takers. Recently, I posted about bluebirds in one of the houses. Now for a week or so, we started seeing other birds going in and out of another one of the bluebird house. The house they are using is further back from the two other houses.

My husband sent me a text to bring the camera to come out and see if I could get some pics of the bird and identify it. I knew it looked to dark to be a bluebird; it looked dark gray.

I was shocked to see a titmouse on the house.  Hmm, I had no clue a titmouse would use a bluebird house.

Love the two pics in the collage below of the titmouse in flight. I thought he was going to fly right into me.

Not sure what this guy thought he was doing, but he didn't bother the house.

Here's the bluebirds in the bluebird house, in case you missed that post: A Visit from the Eastern Blue Bird (In the Birdhouses #1)

We moved two wren houses last year that were in the trees near our deck.  We hung them on a tree branch behind our shop in an area is quieter and not so busy with bird visiting the feeders.

We see the Carolina Wrens flitting around the trees by the shop. The pair sing all day long and are so fun to watch.

The wrens are now nesting in one of the houses. They are difficult to photograph because they generally move so quickly. One thing we have noticed, is the male seems to stand watch in a nearby branch while the female goes in the house. He doesn't move until she comes out. That may give me a chance to get more pics of the male.

Thanks for stopping by for my second post in this series: In the Birdhouses

  1. Great bird photos!
    Love the Titmouse!
I think I have Wrens nesting in a hanging basket flower on my front porch - at least I have seen one perching there - maybe they are still trying to decide where to build.
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. Hello. The birds need nesting houses. You have so many nesting houses and it is a great thing. Lovely post.

  5. Good work in getting those bird houses in occupation Judy. Of course it's recommended that we don't mix feeders and bird houses too near each other because of birds' territorial behaviour.

    1. Thanks Phil, I think I found that out the hard way. But now the houses aren't near the feeders and all is well. Just surprised that the titmouse would use the bluebird houses.

  7. I didn't realize there are bird specific houses. it's been so much fun to see all the bird activity in our new area this Spring. All the bird houses here were put up by the previous owner so we didn't really know what we would see and what birds would use them. Hope you have a good week!

  8. Judy - how exciting to have birds in your houses! I think sometimes it takes a while for the birds to choose a location, and it can be affected by many factors. So it was wise to move some of the houses when you had no residents. We have a robin trying to build a nest on one of the rafters of our log house, but most of the nesting material lands on our deck - I just don't think there is enough surface for a nest. Isn't it fascinating it would try there when we have 100s of trees around us that it could choose? Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

  10. How nice to have homes for your birds! And it's fun to see who's going to come and occupy them. We have little cubbies under our mailboxes and birds love to nest there. Enjoy your week!

  11. So much fun to watch the birds. I only have one swallow birdhouse left at the cabin. When I left six weeks ago a pair was checking it out. If they stayed there should be babies already. - Margy

  12. Ahhhhh a massive hug to you for your Wren houses :) :) Yes, I'm glad you'd noticed us wren's are hard to catch!
I imagine your titmouse has gone home and said to his Misses, I've scored us an upgrade if you want to squeeze in! lol.
    Happy days, enjoy your birdwatching.

  14. Judy, I love the birds. Great to provide housing for them. It is good to lower the vacancy rate and have regular residents. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week. Sylvia D.

  15. Hi Judy! I am alive! I am back - hopefully for a while, we shall see.

Oh my gosh how I love your nature photos - you are such a plethora of wisdom with bird names and such.

Well last year my bluebirds (buntings? not sure, they're fast and far away in a house in far back) didn't come back but this year they did. Predators always get them. So I watched them for 3 days and now not seeing them anymore. Doggone it - first time it happened I bawled like a baby when we found them half eaten. It is too sad to even think about - I want to catch a glimpse of their beautiful blue and haven't....and I am so sad and worried and there is nothing I can do but pray they quit coming back just to die.

Do you think I should get rid of that birdhouse? It is a high one on a pole my husband made - if they're gone I could probably have hubs bring it down and clean up the house and salvage it for another kind of bird, just hang it normally in a tree? What do you think?

I posted an update pictorial on my darling 2 year old grand daughter and her love of pink. You won't even believe how grown she has become! She's not staying little, that's for sure!

    Big hugs to you. ♥

Home of the free because of the brave - thank you to our fallen heroes.
