Summer Blooms in Kentucky

Don't you just love the colors of Summer? Today, I'm going to share some of the colors of blooms in my gardens and colors on my porch.

I have caladiums with their big heart shaped leaves producing lots of gorgeous pink, white, and green color in their foliage. This variety is called Peppermint; I love how showy these caladiums look; they are just gorgeous.

There are three types in this pot: Peppermint, the solid white with green veins is Candidum Jr., and the ones with red centers are Bombshell Caladium.

Another colorful plant on the porch is a tuberous begonia. They come in several colors but this one produces bright red blooms.

Our porch is showing lots of patriotism with a large wreath of vining geraniums and a patriotic bow.

The Kimberly Fern makes such a bold statement. It is often known as a sword fern because of its straight and narrow upright leaves.

In a small bed about 6 foot in length and 3 feet wide, summer color is bold and beautiful with several perennials and some annuals planted. The yellow coneflower has done well in this full sun bed.

Coreopsis returned from last year and with beautiful blooms that attract butterflies and birds.

The Coreopsis is spilling out of the bed over the stepping stones and rock.

Some of my Shasta Daises are full of blooming flowers but I have a fungus on some others.  These will be sprayed to try and rid them of the disease.

A small toad is keeping an eye on the flowers.

The Blue Salvia is growing nicely in another bed.  Hope it fills out more as summer progresses. This is the second year for these.

I enjoy having some pink flowers in my beds. I planted these zinnias from seeds and they have just started blooming this week.

Pink and White Vinca are scattered in my beds for pops of color.

Crystal White tiny Zinnias are planted in pots. They are spreading out in the pot.

I would love to know what colors you have in your gardens - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 29

The male American Goldfinches are so brightly colored in the summer. They visit the feeders with black oil sunflower seeds. You can see a seed in the mouth of one Goldfinch in the collage below.

Maybe the finch doesn't like the Downy Woodpecker on the hummingbird feeder.

Anyway the finch is taking off.

Not many hummers are visiting my feeders but this little guy is stopping by for a drink.

The chipping sparrow is a ground feeder so doesn't visit the feeders but comes around to the deck floor. The black line through the eye is very visible and the rusty crown make him easy to identify.

The Grackles mostly eat on the ground below my feeders. The will come up and eat at the suet feeders and the black oil sunflower feeders. In the pic, you can see some of the blue-green sheen on his neck.

I usually don't capture two Red-bellied Woodpeckers in the same shot but got lucky here.

The Red-bellied is fussing at the little Downy coming up the tree.

The Northern Cardinal is always a delight to watch. Love their visits.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

At the Feeders and in the Trees - Week 28

Lots of birds have been visiting our feeders lately. They are always such a joy to watch. The Carolina Chickadee is so fast, he grabs a seed and is gone so quickly.

House finches visit daily. The pic below is a male and a female.

There is room for everybody to eat at the feeders.

The Nuthatch visits year round just like the finches.

The robins are so busy looking for worms to feed their young. When I dig in my flower beds, they are close by just in case a worm is spied.

Love the crest on this Northern Cardinal.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

A Visit from the Red-Headed Woodpecker

I had a unexpected visitor in the trees off of our deck. I was just shocked to see a Red-Headed Woodpecker when I opened the slider and looked  to the west end of  deck.

He is a first time visitor.

I photographed a red-headed woodpecker a couple of years ago at Kentucky Lake (seen here) but haven't seen one since.

My pics aren't great but I wanted to share.

I always thankful when I get a new bird in my trees. Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

Blooms Galore in Kentucky

Blooms in our yard are opening and they are beautiful. My day lilies are just starting to show their glorious color.

Shasta Daisies are standing tall and sure look perky. A little toad is keeping an eye on them.

Butterfly Weed is blooming. I didn't even remember planting this one. Glad I didn't pull it up thinking is was just another weed in the garden. It is supposed to bloom all summer. I'll share its progression.

My Coreopsis has returned with its profuse blooms. I had several new plants come up so I moved the clumps to different spots and even put one in a pot with some marigolds.

I planted a yellow canna lily in a pot and added asparagus fern and red petunias. Canna like lots of heat so I have this pot in direct sun.

I planted lots of Zinnias this spring; some from seeds and some potted. The potted ones are blooming with orange and red flowers.

The yellow flowers in the pot are calibrachoa.

There is so much to be thankful for each day - my gardens, colorful blooms, and warm sunny days.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.
