Wow, was I excited when I was looking out the window today. Perched on the feeder filled with black-oil sunflower seeds was a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. He was a new visitor to my feeders and a thrill for me to see.
He has black above and white below with white patches on his wings.
Another identifying marking is the bright, rosy pink patch on the breast. I must say the patch looks pretty red to me.
Then further down on AAB, I read it is a brilliant red chevron extending from the black throat down the middle of the breast.
Both sexes show white patches in their wings and tails.
Soon the female grosbeak started visiting the feeders. I took several shots of her not knowing for sure who she was. But a little research let me know her identity.
Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.

ReplyDeleteYou got great shots of both Mr. & Mrs. They are beautiful birds...I am still waiting to see my first painted bunting!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, Judy.
Hi Judy,
ReplyDeleteI've meant to visit for a few weeks now, and I keep getting sidetracked. Your bird photography is terrific!! You get many of the same birds we do, like the Downy Woodpecker and the White-Breasted Nuthatch. My neighbor gets Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks at her feeders, but I haven't seen any here. They're really stunning birds, aren't they? It looks like you really enjoy living in Kentucky -- that's great! I've never been there, but would love to go sometime.
Thanks for sharing the bird pics and have a great week!
Hugs,
Denise at Forest Manor
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI will be posting Rose-Breasted Grosbeak for Wild Bird Wednesday, but your photos are much better than mine. Lovely, lovely birds!
Have a great day!
Lea
I grew up in KY and we would watch and identify the birds. There are many beautiful things about KY! Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteMaybe you will be able to have babies visiting the feeders with their parents...Michelle
ReplyDeleteHello Judy!:) It's such a pleasure to see the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks again. This is a fairly new bird for me to see, as I first discovered it on Eileens blog, and what a beautiful bird it is, especially the male. It's great that you got both male and female shots, and they are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Sunday.
Sonjia.

Great photos and interesting text.
ReplyDeleteOh what beautiful captures! : ) I too enjoy the birds and critters :)
ReplyDeleteJudy, I just had a pair of these beautiful birds on my feeder yesterday for the first time ever and had to research them in my bird book! I also thought the breast feathers were extremely red, and the black and white lines were so sharp. Your photos are fabulous. Thanks for sharing them. Linda
ReplyDeleteWe feed the birds too but have never had one of these. SO pretty. You got great shots!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou were so lucky to get those amazing pictures! What gorgeous birds, glad you have newcomers to your feeder. Saw your feature on Savvy Southern Style ...
