Looking Out the Window - The Eastern Bluebird

Looking out my window last week, I saw a beautiful bluebird with brilliant royal on its back and head plus warm red-brown on the breast.

Gosh, I wish I would have had our better camera instead of my iphone, but I didn't. It was snowing, windy, and cold. I was amazed how long the Eastern Bluebird sat on the branch. Maybe he was too cold to move.

I think I need to bring the other camera down and keep it close to the window for moments like these.

I read here that the Eastern Bluebird is a small thrush with a big, rounded head, large eye, lump body, and alert posture. The wings are are long, but the tail and legs are fairly short. The bill is short and straight.

He was very plump and I sure hope he is able to survive this snowy, cold day. Thanks for stopping by for another day of Life in Kentucky - Judy.

  2. Aren't they magnificent to see! I don't get to see them much because my property is too closed in. They like an open areas best. Our neighbor had a bluebird house on a fence post some years back and they'd visited my feeders during nesting season. They puff up their bodies to stay warm so I'm sure he did fine. We won't see them up here for a while yet.

  4. Hey! We're totally on the same page - I took pics of a cardinal - just happen to have my camera close by b/c I was taking pics of stuff to add to my store and the lightning is good in the kitchen in the early part of the day.....

Last week I saw a chubby darling bluebird - we don't very often because the kestrals and hawks eat them as appetizers - so it is always a thrill to find them. I am so glad you were able to snap a pic - fuzzy or not, I love you shared yours with us, Judy!

  6. Oh, so sweet! He's beautiful!
I found out last year that bluebirds can't eat sunflower seed, their beaks can't break open the shell. I've been buying shelled splits (peanuts) at the bird store this winter and chopping them up into teeny little bits and putting it out for them in a large soup bowl on the deck rail, and they LOVE it.
They come down and perch on the bowl edge and dig in. The chickadees and other birds love it, too. I even have a fat, sassy robin visiting each day to eat...and robins do not normally eat from feeders, they are mostly ground feeders.
I love your sweet bluebird, Judy! If you have a blue bird house up in your yard, maybe they will nest there. I have some that come back each year to nest in my yard.
    Thanks for sharing your bluebird!

  7. I always love to see the little birds, whilst I don't envy you the cold, I would love to have that little fella outside on a branch any day.
    Have a great week.

  9. Judy, get yourself a bluebird house! We bought one a couple of years ago for around $10 at Lowe's. In just a few days they were nesting in it. Here in Texas they stay for the winter. :)

  11. I love bluebirds. I am wondering why yours is so fat! I've seen pictures of rather plump birds just like it but our blue birds are not that chubby. Do you think it is because of your colder climate? I know I may be showing my ignorance here.
I just read from Liz comment that they puff up their feathers to stay warm so that explains it. The males scout out for nesting areas in February.
