Our remodeling in the kitchen is ongoing. In my last post, I left you with a before and after pic of the kitchen tear out.
My husband spent several hours removing the old backsplash tiles from the drywall and we knew it was a mess. Most of the sheetrock tore and became too soft in spots to add new backsplash tiles. We questioned our efforts and felt new drywall would need needed.
Sure enough, new drywall/sheetrock had to be installed.
New sheetrock was needed on all the walls where the old backsplash tiles were removed.
We learned a big lesson with backsplash tiles. We should have just cut out all the sheetrock around the tiles and not wasted so much time and effort. Take this as a Tip in Kitchen Remodeling. Next I have a sheetrock guy coming to mud and finish parts of the sheetrock that will be exposed after the cabinets are installed.

We, too, struggled with the removal of wall paper in our 1970's Ranch Style Home here on the Prairie!!! Those whom installed it didn't size the paper. So~o~o. . .when we removed the wall paper h u g e chunks of drywall came with it, as well!!!
This past Jan~Feb, "Mr. Ed" put all new sheetrock in our Entry Hall and it has made all the difference in the world!!!
The final results will be worth all your toil and troubles!!!

ReplyDeleteWhen we remodeled in the mid 90's there were a bunch of holes along the upper area behind some of the kitchen cupboards. It looked like someone was trying to find electrical lines and just kept beating the drywall until they found it. What a mess! I'm sure the long term benefit will be the best with new drywall.

ReplyDeleteOh boy does this look familiar Judy. What a mess ours was, had to patch where the tiles tore it out. I was planning on gutting my master bath but now I've put that on hold. I've had it remodel for awhile!

Looking at those photos I am reminded of re tiling the bathroom a few years ago. I too needed the sheet rock type treatment. We had to have one wall replastered. It is always a messy job, but I hugely recommend sheetrock or plastering to be expected and required. The overall finishe is then more professional and lasts longer.

This looks like a big hassle, but I am sure it will all pay off! Kitchens are great to remodel because they bring so much added value into your home. It will look so beautiful when it is all said and done as well. That new sheetrock looks great. It is crazy how pulling off tile will just completely destroy that stuff.

Thanks for sharing that lesson with us, although maybe if someone had told you before, you still would not have imagined the amount of work involved. Tearing out Sheetrock is not really the most exciting part of the creative process. People who are doing renovations generally want to get to the good stuff as quickly as possible, putting in new items.
