Waiting for the Hummers

It's way too early for hummingbirds in western Missouri so I thought you might enjoy seeing my hummingbird plates used in my tablescape. I usually don't start with my evening photos but this time I will.

I keep hummingbird feeders right outside my kitchen window. My husband and I always enjoy watching them while we eat lunch or an early evening dinner.

This tablescape is on my round glass topped kitchen table. The  tablecloth  belonged to my Mom and was passed on to me from my Dad.

Now the daytime photos.

The vase and plate in the middle of the table are both Fiestaware. I really like the plate because it is flat, it is their pizza plate and comes in 13 and 15 inch(this is the 13 inch). The flowers are peonies, I like peonies even though I have never seen a hummer on one.

I'm using my white plates, pink cloth napkins, silver napkins rings and pink Fostoria glasses that I used on my pink tablescape for Valentine's Day. That tablescape was on my dining room table so I just moved those pieces from one table to another. You can see the small stitching on the tablecloth in this photo.

The humming birds are birds that comprise the family Trochilidae. They can hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12-80 times per second. They are also the only group of birds able to fly backwards.

I don't think you will want to sit at the table with me till the hummers arrive, so we will check back in late spring for them. I'll be watching for them. My neighbor always calls me to tell me she saw the hummingbird scout. I am not sure if they really send out a scout but I did read that the males migrate first to set up a territory and then the females follow within a week to 10 days.

Thanks for stopping by - Judy.

  1. Thanks for the interesting hummer facts. We have had one sighting in my front flower bed since moving here to FL last year. What a treat! I love your sweet dishes and those gorgeous peonies!

  2. I always put out the food. I just love it when the hummers show up - and I give them all names! They are quite territorial, aren't they? The pictures on your plate remind me of Audubon's painting. They just have that same sort of feeling.
Like the dots around the edges of the Fiestaware. Didn't know Fiestaware made that pattern.

    1. Denise, thanks, I do love hummers too. The dinner plates are not Fiesta, only the pizza plate in the middle and the white vase are Fiesta. Thanks.

  3. Those are beautiful dishes. I visited Mexico a few years ago and was amazed at all the hummingbirds. My dad has attracted them to his feeder, but I haven't had any luck yet.

  4. My mother would have loved this beautiful table. Hummingbirds were her favorites. You're in western Missouri and I am in eastern Kansas, neighbors!

  7. I didn't know they could fly backwards! I'll have to keep an eye open for that little stunt! They move so doggone fast....hard to see them do ANYTHING almost! I used to plant stuff that would attract them, but then we moved...and I have been lazy! :-) Beautiful plates!!! They really do depict the (fast!) flight of the hummingbird! Such a pretty, delicate table linen, too. I marvel at the stitching because it is so tiny and precise. I have NO hope of EVER sewing anything tiny & precise! :-)

  13. Happy Pink Saturday Judy Sweetie...
Oh my what a gorgeous share. I love, LOVE your hummer plates.
They are so pretty and unusual. I have never seen one before.
Your table setting is gorgeous, and I simply love peonies.
My Grandma had a huge peony bush when I was growing up and I
have always loved seeing them on a table setting.

Judy, I live in the desert of Phoenix, my hummers are already here
and visiting daily. I have many and they talk to me. They click and
come down by my shoulder area, when I come home, especially if they
want new food in the feeder, or if the feeder is to empty. So happy to
find a new friend that loves them as much I do.

I am your newest follower. I can't wait to see what you share next.
Have a glorious weekend sweetie. Many country hugs, Sherry

Beautiful setting! I'm not sure when the hummingbirds come to the Bay Area, but now I will be sure to make a mental note. Pretty table setting while waiting! Happy Pink Saturday, too!

  24. Are't these all so pretty, I love the colours and yes, the males do come first and I can hardly wait. I begin placing a little nectar out in late March...to lure them in. Sometimes the last northern visitor migrating down arrives as late as mid October~
